NEEDS

1.Premises

Various premises in Cape Town that could suit our needs are pictured – in State and Private ownership (e.g. former Church school, hospital, school of industry). Location is extremely important – primarily so that they are easily accessible from all parts of the City for everyone at all times. Most suitable premises are in need of renovation and repair. Plans are in hand for this work to include the agreed provision of Technical College Building Trades apprentices, mentored by retired artisans with equipment lent by Public Works departments of local authorities and material donations from the Private Sector. There will inevitably be a funding shortfall for which donations will be required.

2. Equipment

PROmpt has identified over 500 manufacturers of musical / sound / recording equipment and instruments to contact for donations. One of the world’s largest suppliers has agreed to provide some equipment and instruments at the less than cost favourable terms given for the Trial programme.

3. Staff

The largest cost element of any organisation is staff, forming the primary focus of fund-raising. The main State training initiative is driven by a 1% payroll tax which limits access from mainly self-employed Creative Industries that contribute little in income to the process and so get no training out.

Trial programme donors included:

Department of Arts and Culture (SA); Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund; Music Development Trust; City of Cape Town; Standard Bank (SA); National Arts Council; National Lottery; Yamaha (SA);
